It’s all about Hair ❤ The Holy Grail of Hair Care
Finish your dinner , fluff your pillows and get cozy with your bedtime drink… ‘cuz this is gonna be a long read!
One of the things I am thankful about my genes is my hair.. A lot of people get good hair inherited.. But somehow we do things wrong and mess it up!
How are we doing it wrong? More importantly – how can we get it right?
I remember getting hot oil massages back when I was a kid, at least 3 times a week. Of course that was either by my grandma or my mom, while I was being told the many awesome stories… God, I miss being a kid ! Well, since none of us are in that luxury anymore, following are the tips that I wanna share with you today which will help you get rid of the biggest and yet trivial problem and Let me tell you that
** This is all according to my personal experience.. I am not a hair specialist for that matter**
Before we start I want to let you digest the fact that, Hair fall can never be completely stopped. It is a MYTH! What we have to make sure is that the hair growth should be on a higher pace than that of the hair fall.
Okay, so let’s start!
How to wash you hair properly?
Make it a point that you don’t sleep with your hair still wet. This is an ideal environment for dandruff. So time your bath accordingly.
If you have access to pure water (as in no chlorine or any hard water issues) I recommend washing your hair daily. When I say wash, I just mean that you rinse your hair and not shampoo! Never rinse your hair in warm/hot water. The water shouldn’t be Ice cold and that’s all. Think of your hair as a plant. Would you water it with hot/warm water? No!
You have to shampoo your hair at least once a week and utmost twice! Any more than twice a week will drain you hair off of all its natural oils and moisture! Apply oil to your hair and massage for atleast 5 mins and keep it on for atleast 10 mins before you rinse; works best if you do it 3 times a week . Not more not less. Again it’s like caring for a plant. Water it too much easier to pluck it out .. Dry it out, again easier to pluck it out.. Both the cases have their roots weak enough.
Make it a habit to apply oil to your scalp and less of it to the hair. But you should graze hair with oil for maintaining the shine.
Again when using shampoo, dilute it with water and then use it.. I have thick hair and this is how I do it: take a mug, add 3 pumps of shampoo and fill water up to its half. Mix it and lather well. Then I slowly pour it down my wet hair and again scrub n lather. Then rinse it off. This way the chemicals won’t get to your hair too strong; hair is clean; you can use the single bottle probably for double the duration;
Don’t be fooled by the wonderful ads; a shampoo can only do one thing and that’s just cleaning .. what actually does the work is a conditioner.. If you have done a great job with oiling , no need to use it at all. But if not and you do use a conditioner, use the one that comes with your shampoo brand. I insist, because each brand uses different ingredients and the conditioner is something that will pair up with the shampoo ingredients without side effects for sure; otherwise who knows how it will affect our hair? I wouldn’t take risk. But for all I care if I have a shampoo that is all natural, I would be using any conditioner (probably an all natural one).
So there.. my mantra :
Rinse Hair only in cool water.
Oil 3 times a week & shampoo 2 times a week.
Dilute the shampoo to use.
Use the conditioner and shampoo from the same brand series.
How to pick the right oils for your hair?
It all depends on hair and what type of scalp you have.
You know your hair more than me so all I am gonna do here is tell you what oils mean for your hair…
Like I said the oil for your hair is its hydration , the shine and the strength.
The safe option (normal conditions) is always coconut oil. It is too good for both your skin and your hair. It is not that greasy and if you just apply it to the scalp, you can just rinse and go on about your day without shampooing your hair.
Even Almond oil is the same but it is more for the shine of your hair. It doesn’t moisture extremely dry hair. If you need the shine/lustrous effect almond oil is the best.
Argan oil is the liquid gold of hair oils. It is a natural heat protectant if you are a casual user of straightening and curling irons. it also has Vitamins A & E Omega 6 and Lanolin which keeps your hair healthy and glowing even making the frizzy split ends manageable!
Olive oil on the other hand is extremely moisturizing and hence can’t be used on oily scalp unless you shampoo afterwards. It will come down onto your forehead otherwise. Olive oil is a great option for extremely dry scalp.
Amla oil(gooseberry oil) is great to cool down your head. Primarily good for scalp massages. It won’t provide conditioning from my personal experience although it does add a shine without the hydration the hair actually needs.
Castor Oil is greasy and hence can be used if you are planning on staying at home for the day. It drastically increases hair growth especially a faster visible change can be seen on your eyebrows and eye lashes.&
After your Hair Wash...
If you are not on a run and you are not off to an event, please let your hair air dry. Do not use hair dryer daily ! It dries out your hair like in a desert! First use your towel and then let it go. Often I find walking outside in a small breeze to dry hair faster.
Never ever tie or braid if your hair is not completely dry! It breaks the hair young.
Once after it’s all dry and you are ready to go to bed, braid your hair (not too tight; it might give you a head ache the next day). This helps get rid of the frizz and tangles and also will give you those beautiful natural waves to your hair. The more sections you braid the curlier the hair gets. It’s not permanent but, will stay the test of a day.
If you are gonna use a straightener or a curling iron ever, please use a decent heat protector for your hair(argan oil is a safe and cheap option).
mmm Your Diet...
Primarily : The more you are hydrated the more shinier your hair looks. I don’t know the science behind that but it does make a difference. So take more water than you normally would if you have problematic hair.
Next is Spinach! Spinach is considered a superfood for Hair! It’s loaded with vitamins A , E and Iron. All important for hair growth and texture. Milk Egg and meat are equally important.
If you are vegan, please do consider checking your vitamin levels and start taking in the vitamins you lack , if you are having hair issues. Supplement it with either vitamin pills or the food that is rich of it.
Don't forget !
Like skin, hair is also susceptible to UV and IR rays so don’t let your hair show, on a scorching sun day.
Also, hair fall can be reduced to an extent if you sleep without a break for at least 6 hours. 6 hours starts not when you go to bed, but when you actually doze off.
When I mentioned earlier to massage with oil for atleast 5 min 3 times a week, I meant to say that this is a way to actually keep the follicles on the scalp open so that new hair can grow and come out. The closing of the follicles and the hair growth being stunted in those areas in general is termed baldness. The oil helps with stress and hence reduces the head temperature and there by inducing better hair growth. The same formula applies for the aloe vera application onto scalp. Calm and cool scalps never get dandruff and has comparatively lesser hair fall. BUT if you are intolerant of oil staying on your scalp for more than 15 mins(as in if you get a cold/sinus afterwards), you better not apply aloe Vera at all or just keep it on for 5 mins and remove (considering it tremendously reduce dandruff).
